  3. History Talk: The Civil War with Gregg Clemmer

    September 25, 2018, 7:00 PM @ Wayne Theatre

Near the end of his life, Mark Twain wrote that the American Civil War had “uprooted institutions that were centuries old, changed the politics of a people, transformed the social life of half the country, and wrought so profoundly upon the entire national character that the influence cannot be measured short of two or three generations.” Indeed, any examination of contemporary American life readily discovers the war’s enduring consequences—some obvious, others serendipitous—still at work on and across the fabric of our national existence. To be sure, the crux of the talk is to grab your attention about history, to spark curiosity about your heritage, but ultimately it is to inspire you to think… to explore on your own and to analyze the past so that you might advance your future. Join us as Smithsonian study leader and award winning author Gregg Clemmer explores the enduring ramifications of this less than civil…Civil War.
