Chavela was a bold, rebellious, sexual pioneer who was known for having many female lovers at a time when being out in Mexico was dangerous. Chavela centers around a 1991 interview--the singer's first public appearance after 15 hard years lost to alcoholism and heartbreak. In the final years of her life, Chavela openly comes out as a lesbian and rises into her momentous third act, becoming a muse to filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, earning a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, and selling out performances at prestigious concert halls around the world.

  40. The Surprising Role of Virginians in the Great War

    April 30, 2019, 7:00 PM @ Wayne Theatre

Travel back 100-years ago with Dr. Lynn Rainville as she explores the many contributions of Virginians during World War I. The Old Dominion played a surprisingly large role during the Great War, supplying the Allied Forces with food, horses, and steel in 1915 and 1916. After American entered the war on April 6 1917, Virginians served in a number of military and civilian roles, from Red Cross nurses to sailors and from shipbuilders to pilots. In this talk, Dr. Rainville takes the audience on a journey through historic sites in Virginia that served as a backdrop for these efforts. She concludes her lecture with an analysis of the rituals that Virginians used to commemorate and remember the men and women who sacrificed their lives during the war.
